The Beauty of Retrospect: Chris Royer Week, Part Two

Chris Royer could look great in any pose - even in the picture below, from the German issue of Vogue, in which she appears to be auditioning for the lead role in There's Something About Mary! 😃

She could also project youthful innocence, as seen in the Kourken Pakchanian photo below, from 1973.

And she could also project warmth, as in this 1978 photo.

Ms. Royer got her start as a model in the early seventies, working through the Wilhelmina agency and mostly getting assignments for Mademoiselle magazine.   Her breakthrough came when she was sent to meet Roy Halston Frowick - Halston only used his middle name professionally -  in 1972. "The place was fabulous- all done in creams, with lots of sunlight pouring in, that chic kind of California thing," she remembered, and when she got there she found herself talking to this handsome young man she assumed to be one of Halston's employees while waiting to see the famed designer.  She had a wonderful conversation with the gentleman and confided to him she wanted to be a model but also hoped to get involved in designing.  Soon after that, an assistant walked in and told the gentleman that one of his clients was here.  The gentleman was none other than ol' Roy H. Frowick himself. "He saw my reaction and started laughing hysterically," Ms. Royer later remembered.

Perhaps she was thinking of the moment she met Halston when she smiled for the Arthur Elgort photo above.  By then, Ms. Royer knew how to project anything in front of the camera, and she worked with some of the best talents in fashion known for their work behind the camera.
