The Beauty of Song, Part Eight: Sue Foley

Sue Foley may sound like a daytime-talk-show guest when you look at her CV as a musician.  She's  a Canadian blueswoman born in 1968.

But that doesn't make her any less a novelty than British blues singers like John Mayall or Alexis Korner.

Although Ms. Foley grew up in Ottawa, she eventually made her way to Austin, where she ended up recording for Antone's, the blues label and legendary nightclub.   She later moved to other small labels.

Among her albums are her 1992 debut Young Girl Blues, 1996's Walk in the Sun, and 2006's New Used Car.

Ms. Foley has toured steadily with her band over the years.  In 2001, she won a Juno Award, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy, for her 2000 release Love Coming Down.  She's also made guest appearances on records from other contemporary blues artists such as Mark Hummel and Wayne Hancock.

Fun fact 1: Ms. Foley plays a pink paisley Fender Telecaster guitar.

Fin fact 2:  Her 2018 album The Ice Queen features guest appearances by Jimmie Vaughan and by ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons.
