The Beauty of Sport, Part Five: Lisa Leslie

Lisa Leslie is one of the heroines of the first generation of women in the Women's National Basketball Association.

She became a star player with the Los Angeles Sparks, where she racked up an impressive scoring statistics and became one of the most indispensable players - if not the most indispensable player - on the team.  In the time she was with the Sparks, Ms. Leslie became the first WNBA player to score 4,000 career points   and to this day remains the Sparks' career-scoring and rebounding leader. She helped the Sparks win three WNBA Western Conference championships ( 2001, 2002, and 2003) , two league championships (2001, 2002), and more Most Valuable Player awards - regular season, All-Star game, and finals - than you can count!  (For the record, ten.)

Did I happen to mention that she was on the American national women's basketball team and played in four consecutive Olympiads - beginning with the 1996 Games - which won the gold medal all four times?

Lisa Leslie retired from basketball in 2009, but she hasn't gone away.  She's been a fashion model - of course -and also a sports commentator on various networks. She remains a major icon for little girls who want to get into sports.
