The Beauty of Sport, Part Five: English Gardner

Yes, that's her real name.

English Gardner - named by parents with a sense of humor - is very American, having been born in Philadelphia and raised in the southern New Jersey suburbs.  She became a big track star in the college circuit, becoming one of the NCAA's most astounding sprinters.  Her national titles her 2012 and 2013 victories in the 100-meter dash in the NCAA Women's Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships and her 2012 win in the 60-meter dash (I didn't even know there were races that short!) in 2012, as well as her 2013 and 2016 wins in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships' 100-meter dash.

Ms. Gardner competed in the 2016 Olympics, winning the gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay and earnings silver in the same even at the World Championships twice - in 2013 in Moscow and in 2015 in Beijing. She's been less successful in solo international competition, only finishing seventh in the 100-meter dash at the 2016 Olympics, but she is likely going to be a factor in the next Olympiad (whenever that is).
