The Beauty of Song, Part Seven: Jewel

Jewel Kilcher - she only goes by her first name - came out of nowhere (actually, she came from Alaska) in the mid-nineties with the sort of singer-songwriter folk pop that everyone had thought was obsolete.

Her 1995 album Pieces of You was a huge success, spawning three hit singles - "Who Will Save Your Soul," "Foolish Games," and "You Were Meant for Me," the latter of which were written by Jewel and Canadian singer-songwriter Steve Poltz.  Her follow-up LP, 1998's Spirit, featured the singles "Down So Long" and "Jupiter" and was also well-received.

Her twenty-first-century LPs include 2001's This Way, 2006's Goodbye Alice in Wonderland, and 2008's Perfectly Clear. While not as big sellers ass her earlier work, they've maintained Jewel's fan base. She's also done a couple of Christmas albums and even some acting, appearing in the Hallmark Channel mystery movies Framed for Murder: A Fixer Upper Mystery, and Concrete Evidence: A Fixer Upper Mystery, both in which she played Shannon Hughes, housing contractor who solves mysteries.

Jewel is also an activist, having helped to raise money for clean-water initiatives and campaigned for affordable housing.
