The Beauty of Song, Part Seven: Vanessa Carlton

Vanessa Carlton is a singer-songwriter wunderkind who debuted at the dawn of the millennium.

Her 2002 debut album Be Not Nobody, released on the A&M label, got people's attention with its piano-base songs and its liberal use of orchestration, and it produced a big hit single with the song "A Thousand Miles."  Ms. Carlton's initial successes made her a rising star to listen to.

Unfortunately, not too many people listened to her follow-up albums, 2004's Harmonium and 2007's Heroes & Thieves, despite generally positive reviews.  She caused a stir when she released "White Houses," a song with a reference to sex, as Harmonium's first single, and MTV banned the promotional video for it.  She would find herself recording for smaller labels in the following decade.

Ms Carlton's 2010s albums, 2011's Rabbits on the Run and 2015's Liberman, were well-received by her fans, who remained loyal to her, and the press.  She continues to solider on, releasing a new LP this year (2020) Love Is an Art.  Also, she's played Carole King - no doubt one of her heroines - in Beautiful, the Broadway musical about Carole King's life.
