It was in 1970 when the world first learned of Alda Balestra. She came out of nowhere - Trieste, which Italians consider as provincial as Americans consider Boise, Idaho provincial - to win the Miss Italy pageant at a mere sixteen years of age. Soon after that, she was modeling in Milan and, later, Paris. Within a decade, she was one of the top models in the fashion trade.
The photo above captures Ms. Balestra in a soft, innocent pose, recalling the teenage girl who wowed those beauty contest judges. The picture below shows her all grown up . . .
