The Beauty of Sport, Part Five: Aly Wagner

Aly Wagner is another legend in American women's soccer.

She was part of the historic 1999 national women's team that won the Women's World Cup (a year after the men's team, in 1998 World Cup, came in last after losing to - of course  - the Iranians!).  She played for Santa Clara University in California from 1998 to 2002, where started 21 out of 23 games and scored 10 goals with 12 assists. She was named First-Team All-WCC and the WCC Freshman of the Year for 1998-99 and was also named First-Team All-WCC.

Ms. Wagner would competed for the United States women's national soccer team from 1999 to 2008 and appeared in  131 international matches, scoring 21 goals and making 42 assists - and winning a gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics.  She was there again for the team's gold-medal victory in Beijing in 2008.

Now married to Major League Soccer veteran Adam Eyre, Ms. Wagner is a soccer commentator, having worked for Fox Sports and ESPN as a soccer analyst. She is the first woman to call a  Men's World Cup game on American television.

That's it for my fifth series of women in sports.  Hopefully, when I post a sixth series, sports will be  completely up and running again.  A new A-Z round for August and September starts soon.
