TV newswoman Alicia Richards

Alicia Richards is another TV newswoman toiling away at a small station in the hinterlands, in one of those minor-league cities where even the network affiliates, like Ms. Richards' own station, broadcast on UHF.  But, as always, it could always lead to something bigger and better.

In the case of Alicia Richards, the city is Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania, and the station is WHTM-TV, the ABC affiliate broadcasting in Channel 27.  She co-anchors the 5:00 P.M., 6:00 P.M., and 11:00 P.M. newscasts.  (This is the same station that employs Valerie Pritchett, a recent honoree on this blog.)

Ms. Richards, though does more than sit behind a desk.  She has done special reports for WHTM, including stories about the opioid crisis, domestic violence (which earned her a regional Emmy for revealing that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has failed to keep track of how judges rule in domestic-violence cases), and the Pennsylvania state militia's peacekeeping efforts in Kosovo, which required her to travel to the former Serbian province to get the firsthand story.  She has also interviewed Michele Buck, the first female CEO of the Hershey chocolate company (Hershey, Pennsylvania is just east of Harrisburg).  Ms. Richards has also covered the two most recent national party conventions held in Philadelphia (the 2000 Republican National Convention and the 2016 Democratic National Convention and the 2000 Republican National Convention), and her work on promoting breast cancer awareness has earned her an award from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters.

With that record of achievements, Alicia Richards may just ant to remain a big fish in the small pond of medium-market newscasting.  She's likely very happy at WHTM, so you can expect from her more news, as the late Max Robinson used to say, on this . . . ABC station! :-)
