Desirée Taylor was a familiar face to New Jersey television viewers for nearly a decade. She was a reporter for the state's public broadcasting channel, the New Jersey Network (NJN), beginning in 2001.
Originally from Connecticut, Ms. Taylor actually pursued a career in the performing arts before switching to journalism. She was a dancer with the Philadelphia Dance Company before becoming an NJN reporter.
Sadly, she's no longer an NJN reporter. New Jersey governor Chris Christie, the Fat Man In the State House, let a New York City-based public television take over NJN - now called NJTV - to save the state money. The New York-based managers of NJTV don't have use for a high-quality weeknightly newscast, and so the entire news staff - indeed, the entire NJN staff - was let go.
This blogger got to see Ms. Taylor in action when she was reporting for NJN about a library branch in Montclair, New Jersey, that, ironically, had been closed due to budget cuts but re-opened in a private-public partnership by local volunteers. Ms. Taylor covered the grand re-opening, and I was there. I even got to meet her.

Update: NJTV started a newscast of its won, and Desirée Taylor has since joined NJTV, the successor to the New Jersey Network, as a senior correspondent.
