Shirley Bassey is an even bigger institution in British popular music than Cilla Black was.
The Welsh-born singer - best known for her recordings of theme songs for James Bond movies such as Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever - has recorded a plethora of albums and done so many numerous covers of familiar songs - all to great acclaim - that to list even a few of them as a summation would be too difficult if not impossible to do. She is so revered in the U.K. that she was made a Dame of the British Empire. "Surely you can't be serious!" you say.
I am serious. And don't call her Shirley. She's Dame Shirley Bassey to you. 😊
