Model Mounia Orosemane

Mounia Orosemane is a trailblazer among black models, and while there are a lot of trailblazing black models, Mounia - as she was professionally known - is different.

By the late seventies, black women had appeared in ads, fashion editorials, and fashion magazine covers, but no black female model had ever walked the runways of Paris . . . until Mounia came along.

The Martinique-born beauty first modeled for Givenchy, than for Chanel, where she became the first black model to work for the fashion house.  Then Yves Saint Laurent discovered her and made her his muse.  She achieved another first by becoming the first black woman to walk for Saint Laurent, and she soon became a regular presence at his fashion shows.

Mounia, whose full name is Monique-Antoine Orosemane, has since returned to Martinique, where she has gotten involved in painting.  She regular creates new works of art while living on that French island in the West Indian Lesser Antilles.
