Hannah Waddingham became a big star in America as a result of the huge success of the Apple TV+ series "Ted Lasso," about an American college football coach hired to choice a soccer team in England. The series actually started as an accident when Jason Sudeikis played the character Ted Lasso for a series of promotional ads for NBC's coverage of the Premier soccer league in the U.K.
Ms. Waddingham plays Rebecca Welton, a soccer team owner who hires Ted Lasso to coach her team with the hope that he will fail due to his ignorance of the sport as a way of getting even with her unfaithful ex-husband, the team's previous owner. Instead, Ted turns the club around with his warm,, easygoing coaching style and wins Rebecca over to his success.
Ms. Waddingham has spent much of her acting career in British theater, playing roles in musicals such as Spamalot, A Little Night Music, and Into the Woods. She also has a recurring role, as Sofia Marchetti in "Sex Education," a British sitcom about dealing with sex-ed issues at a secondary school.
