Although Cheryl Freeman has appeared in movies and TV shows, she is best known for her work in the theater.
She made her Broadway debut in a revival of Showboat in 1983 and, a decade or so later, was the first actress on Broadway to play the Gypsy in the Broadway musical version of the Who’s rock opera Tommy. She was also in the original Broadway cast of Play On!, a musical version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
Among Ms. Freeman's off-Broadway credits are Miss Esther Sherman in Fame on 42nd Street, Kate in We’re Still Hot, and Clarity in Cougar, the Musical.
