Valarie Allman is one of the American breakout stars from the Tokyo Olympic Games, where she was on the track and field team.
She's a discus thrower.
She first gained notoriety at the 2014 World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon, winning silver in the discus throw. Despite repeat success at earning a silver medal at the 2017 Universiade in Taipei and the 2018 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships, the big prize - an Olympic medal - had eluded her, but at Tokyo she made up for that with a gold in the discus throw.
Ms. Allman actually discovered her talent for discus throwing after having pursued dancing as a teenager. She had grown dried of dancing, and in high school she was convinced to give the discus a whirl. (Pun very much intended.) Her dance background helped her throw as far and wide as the best, setting her on a path to success.
