Detroit TV newswoman Rhonda Walker

Rhonda Walker has been a staple of Detroit TV news since 1998.

The Motor City native began her broadcast journalism career at WJBK-TV in her hometown before moving to Detroit's NBC affiliate, WDIV-TV, in 2003 as the weekday morning news anchor, and by 2007 she was WDIV's evening news co-anchor and health reporter.  In between, she was the news anchor for the station's 12:00 P.M. report and hosted and produced a news segment centering on parents and children.

She's interviewed several prominent Michigan politicians as well as famous Michiganders (I don't like that demonym either) such as Anita Baker (an earlier honoree on this blog), Aretha Franklin, and Smokey Robinson.

In 2003, the year she joined WDIV, Ms. Walker established the Rhonda Walker Foundation, which  supports and mentors inner-city teenage girls from the Detroit Public School System. It's this sort of commitment to public service that got Ms. Walker several awards for her community involvement, including the 2018 Angelo B. Henderson Community Service Award from the National Association of Black Journalists, along with awards for her reporting too numerous to list here. You can access her foundation's Web site here

It's safe to say that Rhonda Walker will remain a Detroit institution for a long time. :-)
