Missy Franklin was one of the breakout stars of American swimming at the 2012 Olympics in London.
She won the gold medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke races, ans she was also part of the winning 4×200-meter freestyle and the 4×100-meter medley relay teams. She wasn't as successful in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro Games, but she did win a gold medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
In between, she won six gold medals at the 2013 World Championships in various backstroke and freestyle races.
Ms. Franklin may be too old - at 25! - to compete at the 2020 Games, but she's already left a legacy that will ensure her place among the great swimmers of the United States.
Fin fact: Missy Franklin was born to Canadian parents in Pasadena, California, and she has dual Canadian/American citizenship.
