The Indian-born Ms. Lakshmi has been a model, and actress, and a cookbook author, as well as a host of cooking shows and magazine shows on Italian and American television. Her movie roles include parts in Boom (an Indian "Bollywood" film) and The Mistress of Spices, as well as roles in the TV shows "Star Trek: Enterprise" and "Sharpe" (an historical drama about the Napoleonic Wars).
She was also married to controversial British author Salman Rushdie from 2004 to 2007.
