The Beauty of Dance: Jenifer Ringer, New York City Ballet, New York, NY

Jenifer Ringer - yes, she spells her first name with one "n" - is a rising star in the New York City Ballet company founded by George Balanchine. Since becoming a principal dancer in 2000, she's danced in numerous NYCB productions - mostly Balanchine works, of course.

In 2010, New York Times dance critic Alastair MaCaulay declared that, as the Sugar Plum Fairy in that year's production of The Nutcracker, Ms. Ringer looked plump, appearing "as if she'd eaten one sugarplum too many." This was a distasteful shot and a cheap laugh. Ms. Ringer had a lot of people come to her defense, and deservedly so.
